GID was established in accordance with the Act 24 of 1964 which outlined the duties and responsibilities of GID, namely to safeguard the security of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan domestically and abroad by means of carrying out necessary intelligence operations.
GID Director is appointed by a Royal Decree, based on a decision made by the Counsel of Ministers. Officers are also appointed by a Royal Decree upon the recommendation of the Director General. Applicants joining the service must be in possession of educational qualifications and need to pass a security check. Once enrolled in the service, the new recruits undergo necessary training to carry out their assigned duties.
GID has numerous offices spread all over the governorates; its headquarters are located in Amman.
